Caffeine free energy supplement: why we left it out

Fireblood is a caffeine free daily vitamin, and that was deliberate. If you want a caffeine free supplement that changes how you feel, the only thing with decent evidence behind it is filling a nutrient gap you actually have. That is a narrower promise than most energy products make. It is also the only one we can keep.

This is a post about a formula decision, so it is worth saying up front what the decision cost us. Caffeine is cheap, legal, and it works within twenty minutes. Leaving it out means our product does nothing you can feel on day one. We did it anyway.

What caffeine actually does

Adenosine builds up in your brain across the day. The more of it that accumulates, the more tired you feel. That is the signal. Caffeine works by sitting on adenosine receptors so the signal cannot land, which is the mechanism laid out in Fredholm and colleagues' 1999 review in Pharmacological Reviews.

Read that again, because the wording matters. Caffeine does not produce anything. The adenosine is still there. You have muted the notification, not cleared the backlog. When the caffeine clears, the accumulated signal arrives at once, which is why the crash feels disproportionate to the lift.

It is also not a small habit. Mitchell and colleagues surveyed 37,602 US consumers in 2014 and found 85% of the population drinks at least one caffeinated beverage a day, at a mean of 165mg. The 90th percentile was 380mg. For most people this is not an occasional stimulant, it is a daily baseline they have stopped noticing.

The dependence is measurable. A 2004 review in Psychopharmacology by Juliano and Griffiths validated ten withdrawal symptoms across 66 studies. The list includes fatigue, decreased energy, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating, which is to say the exact complaints people drink coffee to fix. Headache showed up in 50% of experimental participants. Symptoms appeared at intakes as low as 100mg a day, roughly one cup.

And it reaches further into the night than most people assume. Drake and colleagues gave 400mg of caffeine at 0, 3, and 6 hours before bed and measured sleep with a validated home monitor. All three timings disrupted sleep against placebo. A 2pm coffee is still working on your 10pm.

What most brands do instead

Put caffeine in a powder and the product demonstrates itself. The customer scoops it, feels something inside half an hour, and credits the formula. Retention goes up. Reviews say "I can really feel this one." None of that feedback is about the vitamins.

That is why so many greens powders, daily blends, and "energy support" mixes carry caffeine, guarana, or green tea extract somewhere in the ingredient list, often below the flashier actives. It is the cheapest way to make a tub of micronutrients feel like it is doing something. It is also, in our view, a bit of a con, because the ingredient doing the work is the one you could have bought with a cup of coffee.

The decision we made

Fireblood has 39 ingredients in a 10.12g scoop, and not one of them is there to produce a sensation within twenty minutes. No caffeine, no guarana, no green tea extract, no stimulant of any kind.

The reasoning is simple enough. If we added caffeine, the product would feel like it worked immediately, and we would never know whether anything else in the tub was earning its place. Neither would you. A formula that hides behind a stimulant does not have to be good.

What a caffeine free supplement can actually fix

Here is the honest version, and it is less exciting than the marketing on most tubs.

Your body runs its energy metabolism on enzymes, and those enzymes need cofactors. The B vitamins are the main ones. As Kennedy's 2016 review in Nutrients sets out, all eight act as co-enzymes across a wide range of reactions including energy production, and a meaningful share of people in developed countries are deficient or insufficient in at least one of them. Fireblood carries thiamine at 12mg, riboflavin 5-phosphate at 10mg, niacinamide at 31mg NE, P5P at 10mg, methylfolate at 667ug DFE, methylcobalamin at 2.5ug, and pantothenic acid at 20mg.

Magnesium sits in the same category. de Baaij and colleagues' 2015 review in Physiological Reviews puts it in over 600 enzymatic reactions, energy metabolism among them. Fireblood provides 100mg from magnesium malate and magnesium bisglycinate, which is a top-up against a typical shortfall rather than a full day's requirement, and we would rather say that than round it up.

Now the part that cuts against us. Correcting a gap only helps if the gap is yours. A 2021 meta-analysis in Nutrients pooling 16 randomised trials and 6,276 participants looked at B12 supplementation in people without overt deficiency and found no effect on any subdomain of cognitive function and no effect on depression. Fatigue could not even be pooled, because only one of the sixteen trials reported it. If your B12 is fine, more B12 does nothing for you.

There is one more thing worth flagging, because it is the most common nutritional cause of genuine fatigue and we deliberately do not cover it. Fireblood contains no iron. That was its own decision, explained in why Fireblood has no iron, and it means anyone whose tiredness is driven by low ferritin needs a blood test and a targeted supplement, not us. The tradeoff we accepted

We gave up the first impression. A new customer takes Fireblood for a week and, unless they were short on something, reports nothing dramatic. Compared to a scoop with 200mg of caffeine in it, that reads as a worse product. It costs us reviews and it costs us the customers who wanted a feeling.

It also costs us on the input side. Caffeine is pennies. Magnesium bisglycinate, P5P, methylcobalamin, and L-5-MTHF are not, and they are harder to justify to anyone reading the label quickly, because the cheap forms of all four are legal to put on the same panel. We pay for the forms and skip the stimulant, which is close to the worst possible strategy if the goal is to feel impressive in week one.

The bet is that you would rather have the thing that works slowly than the thing that works at 9am and bills you at 3pm.

We sell powder in a tub. We know how that sounds. What we will not do is put a stimulant in it so the tub can take credit for your coffee.
