What D2 and D3 actually are
They are two different molecules that both count as "vitamin D" on a label. D3 is cholecalciferol. It is the form your skin makes from sunlight, and supplement D3 is produced from lanolin in sheep's wool or, for vegan versions, from lichen. Why D3 is the form that works
Both forms can raise your blood level. D3 is the one the research backs. This is where most people get caught. A product can print "vitamin D 1,000 IU" in big type and bury "(as ergocalciferol)" in the ingredient line. Ergocalciferol is D2. The IU figure looks identical to a D3 product, so the form is the only thing that separates a good choice from a weak one.
